Apricot

Apricot

Fruit of the tree Prunus Armeniaca, in the Rose family.  Cultivated generally throughout the temperate regions of the world and used fresh, cooked in pastries, or preserved by canning or drying.  The fruit is nearly smooth and generally similar to the peach shape but with little to no hairiness when ripe.  Apricots are a great source of Vitamin A and are high in natural sugars, making for a healthy snack!

Growing Area
California produces over 95% of the Apricots grown in the United States.

Handling and Storage
Apricots are very fragile and should not be handled roughly or stored at high temperatures.  Avoid buying apricots that are dull looking, soft, mushy, bruised, or extremely firm.  Keep them in the refrigerator for a day or two to preserve their life, they will not keep long.

Availability
Apricots are available from January until early August.  California Apricots are available from May through August.  Imported Apricots come from Chile and New Zealand and are available from January – March.
