Pineapple

Pineapple

Named for its resemblance to the pine cone, it is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries.  Pineapples are consumed both fresh (raw) and cooked, canned, or juiced.  The outer skin of the pineapple is not eaten.

Costa Rica (consumed on the East Coast); Hawaii (consumed on the West Coast)
 
Handling and Storage 
Pineapple is very perishable. It should be refrigerated to maximize its life span to five-seven days.  If kept a room temperature it should be used within two days.  Choose a ripe pine that is more golden colored than dark green to eat.  Slice off the top and then the sides before eating.
